Featuring Our Dedicated Leaders

Written by Brandi Hartsell

TASL is an amazing organization (just ask AASL). But it is the people who dedicate their time and energy that make it great. We at TASL Talks want to highlight our leaders and express our gratitude for their commitment to our wonderful profession. We will be featuring each member of leadership throughout the remainder of the year. I’m excited to share with you more about our 2020 President Vicki Winstead.

Name: Vicki Winstead

Position Within TASL: President

School: Vance Middle School

How has being a member of TASL impacted your practice as a school librarian?

Wow! Where to start? Joining TASL many years ago as a brand new librarian was one of the best decisions I’ve made professionally. Over the years I have learned so much from all the other amazing librarians that make up this organization. Attending coferences and summer professional development has really helped me stay up to date on current trends in school librarianship. TASL has helped me build a strong professional learning network of some of the best school librarians in the country. Having this support network has meant so much to me and has made me a better librarian. TASL has also given me opportunities to grow as a leader and serve others.

What do you value most about the school librarian profession?

The thing I value most about our profession are the people who serve as school librarians. When I look back at my career as a school librarian, I am amazed at how our roles have evolved. Librarians are a dedicated group ready to face new challenges head on. Librarians are innovators and leaders, willing to learn and grow. I am always inspired and awed by our school library community.

What are you currently reading?

Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen McManus. A great mystery to kick off summer! I am also currently reading The Ickabog that JK Rowling has published free online and it is fantastic!  I love getting caught up in the worlds she creates! If you’re an HP fan you must give it a go!
